The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, has distributed cheques worth about ₦2.4 billion to 1,075 beneficiaries and families of late police officers under the Group Life Assurance and IGP Family Welfare Schemes.A statement issued on Wednesday by the Force Public Relations Officer, Anthony Placid, confirmed that the presentation ceremony was held at the Nigeria Police Force Headquarters.

The total payout, put at ₦2,435,421,584.11, covers multiple policy periods including 2018/2019, 2020/2021, 2021/2022, 2022/2023, as well as 2024/2025 and 2025/2026. It also includes outstanding insurance claims recovered from previous years. Speaking at the event, the Force Insurance Officer, Lydia Ameh, said the disbursement demonstrates the resolve of the police leadership to place the welfare of officers and their families first. She explained that the payments were largely recoveries tied to long-standing insurance liabilities and noted that firm measures had been implemented to ensure insurers meet their obligations and prevent delays in settling claims.

Ameh also reaffirmed the dedication of the Force Insurance Unit to delivering services that are efficient, transparent, and accountable. In his remarks, Disu described the occasion as a moment to honour officers who lost their lives while serving the country, stressing that personnel welfare remains a key focus of his leadership. He said the gesture extends beyond financial assistance, symbolising the Force’s lasting responsibility to recognise the bravery, dedication, and sacrifices of fallen officers while supporting their families.

The police chief assured beneficiaries that efforts would be stepped up to strengthen welfare systems, enhance administrative processes, and remove bottlenecks affecting the timely release of benefits. He added that modern technology would be deployed to improve transparency, simplify claims procedures, and reinforce accountability in welfare management. The Nigeria Police Force reiterated that the sacrifices made by fallen officers remain vital to maintaining the country’s peace, security, and stability.
