The sanitation exercise held on Saturday, April 25, 2026, signaled the official return of a statewide clean-up initiative that had been suspended for nearly a decade.Residents were required to tidy their surroundings, clear drainage systems, and dispose of waste properly between 6:30 a.m. and 8:30 a.m. The Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, stated that the level of participation reflected a renewed sense of civic duty and increased awareness of environmental cleanliness.

According to Wahab, the exercise represents a shared responsibility and plays a crucial role in promoting a cleaner, healthier, and flood-resilient Lagos. He added that authorities would ensure stricter enforcement of the programme moving forward, emphasizing that the initiative goes beyond symbolism and is essential in addressing ongoing waste management challenges.Residents were encouraged to take ownership of their environment by maintaining cleanliness, clearing drainage channels around their homes, and disposing of waste responsibly.Officials reported a generally positive level of compliance across key areas of the state, with monitoring teams deployed to evaluate participation and environmental conditions during the exercise. The Lagos Waste Managemen

t Authority also called for sustained cooperation, stressing that maintaining cleanliness is a collective responsibility that should extend beyond the designated exercise period. ⁵The monthly sanitation programme was last observed in 2016 before being halted due to legal and policy adjustments. Its reintroduction is part of broader efforts to enhance urban sanitation and mitigate flooding risks across Lagos.
