Renowned Nigerian artist Timi Dakolo has shared his inspiring journey to becoming a professional musician. In a recent episode of the “On The Record” podcast, Dakolo recounted how music started as a pastime before evolving into a full-time career.
Dakolo’s decision to pursue music professionally was influenced by his victory in the first season of Idols West Africa in 2007. This milestone marked a significant turning point in his career, solidifying his resolve to make music his profession. In a recent interview with Pulse, Dakolo shared a heartwarming story about meeting his wife, Busola, at church. Their friendship blossomed into romance, and Dakolo would often drive her around in the car he won from the Idols West Africa competition.
He remarked: “I still see myself as an accidental musician. Yeah, I used to sing in choir. I used to just like that I sang. The first idea of music was during morning devotion.
“Then, we started singing street songs. We used to have notebooks where we write songs and they were girls to impress. So music was not something I thought I would do professionally. It was after Idols that I decided to do music professionally.“I said to myself, ‘Okay, we are here. Sometimes you meet your destiny on the road you take to avoid it.”
Interestingly, the vehicle Dakolo received as a prize was a Picanto, which he used to transport Busola during their courtship. At one point, Busola requested that Dakolo refrain from parking the car in front of her office at Zenith Bank, as it caused her embarrassment.
Dakolo’s story serves as a testament to his perseverance and dedication to his craft. From his humble beginnings to his current status as a celebrated Nigerian artist, Dakolo’s journey is an inspiration to aspiring musicians and fans alike.
