Residents of Specialist Quarters in Gwagwalada, Federal Capital Territory (FCT), were left in a state of distress after a devastating fire outbreak razed their apartments. The incident occurred on Wednesday, January 29, 2025, at approximately 7:37 am.
The fire quickly spread, leaving a trail of destruction and rendering several families homeless. Despite efforts to contain the blaze, it rapidly engulfed other apartments and properties, exacerbating the damage.
The affected families were overcome with grief, with one resident, Mrs. Gloria, bursting into tears upon returning home to find her apartment completely destroyed. A neighbor, Mrs. Rebecca Musa, recounted the events leading up to the fire, stating that it broke out after Mrs. Gloria had taken her children to school.
Mrs. Musa explained that she immediately raised an alarm, but most neighbors had already left for work. She rushed out of the compound to seek help, but unfortunately, the entire apartment had been razed by the time assistance arrived.
A neighbor, Gabriel, suspected that the fire might have been caused by an electrical fault, noting that it spread rapidly to eight other apartments. The fire outbreak has left the community in shock, with many residents struggling to come to terms with the loss.
“You know the quarters and buildings were attached to each other, but that of the woman is the most affected because the fire started from her apartment which was occupied mostly by tenants,” he said. “In fact, the woman and her family members are now stranded. All her valuables were razed in the inferno.”
The Secretary of Gwagwalada Area Council, Alhaji Muhammad Saba, has expressed his deep sympathy to those affected by the fire. He urged the community to rally around the affected families and appealed to well-meaning individuals and relevant authorities to provide necessary assistance.
The fire outbreak has highlighted the importance of fire safety measures and emergency preparedness in residential areas. As the community comes together to support the affected families, efforts will be made to determine the cause of the fire and prevent similar incidents in the future.
