The Lagos State Government has announced a restriction on the movement of goods and heavy luggage on all regulated public transport buses operating across the state. The directive is expected to take effect from June 1, 2026.The Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA) issued the announcement on Tuesday through its Head of Corporate Communication, Kolawole Ojelabi.According to LAMATA, the decision was prompted by increasing complaints and operational difficulties caused by the use of public buses for transporting heavy goods, a practice it said has affected passenger comfort, safety, and service efficiency.

The agency explained that the policy was agreed upon during a strategic meeting with bus operating companies, where stakeholders agreed that the practice should be stopped and properly restructured to improve the transport system. LAMATA further stated that enforcement of the directive would be strict, warning that any driver found violating the rule by carrying goods during the enforcement period would be dismissed and blacklisted. It also warned that any staff member or official found assisting or allowing the loading of goods onto regulated buses would face immediate dismissal without exception.

The agency stressed that there would be zero tolerance for non-compliance, adding that the government is committed to improving order, safety, and efficiency in public transportation.Commuters, transport operators, and terminal officials were urged to comply with the directive and make alternative arrangements for the movement of goods. LAMATA reaffirmed its commitment to providing a safer, more reliable, and commuter-focused transport system for residents of Lagos State.
