
The Enugu State Government has begun constructing an electric car assembly plant in Owo community, aiming to shift the state’s economic focus from consumption to production. The announcement was made in a statement by Dan Nwomeh, media aide to Governor Peter Mbah, on his official X account on Thursday.
Governor Mbah officially launched the project during a foundation-laying event in Owo, attended by members of the state executive council and representatives of Stallion Group. The initiative, tagged a strategic move to attract investment and foster economic transformation, marks the launch of the Stallion Vehicle Assembly Plant and Automotive Infrastructure.
In collaboration with Stallion MG Automobiles Ltd, the initial phase targets the assembly of 2,000 hybrid sedans, with future plans for bus manufacturing. Representing the governor, Secretary to the State Government, Prof. Chidiebere Onyia, highlighted the plant’s role in advancing industrialization and economic inclusion in the state.
He noted that the project would generate thousands of direct and indirect jobs for engineers, technicians, logistics professionals, and administrative workers. The facility is also expected to support a youth taxi empowerment program and serve as a training centre for automotive engineering.Governor Mbah praised Stallion Group for investing in Enugu and reaffirmed the administration’s goal to attract global investors and innovators.
Group Managing Director of Stallion Group, Mahesh Vaswani, described the project as a commitment to innovation, economic growth, and sustainable transportation for Nigeria and West Africa. Present at the event were Commissioners Dr. Obi Ozor (Transport), Pharm. Chika Ugwuoke (Labour and Employment), and Mrs. Ngozi Enih (Children, Gender, and Social Development), who emphasized the project’s alignment with the state’s clean energy goals and praised the host community for their cooperation.
Chairman of Nkanu East Local Government Area, Hon. Okechukwu Edeh, commended the governor’s reform agenda, which he said is already attracting both local and international investors. The plant signifies Enugu’s entry into Nigeria’s electric vehicle sector, positioning the state as a potential automotive and green mobility hub in the South East and across Africa.
