At least 15 people have been killed and more than 80 others injured after a powerful explosion hit a mosque in Islamabad, Pakistan’s capital, on Friday afternoon, according to local officials and emergency responders. The blast occurred during Friday prayers at a crowded Shia Muslim mosque in the Tarlai area of the city. Police and Rescue 1122 personnel were quickly deployed to the scene, while the injured were rushed to several hospitals across the capital for treatment.
In a statement, Islamabad authorities confirmed that 15 people lost their lives in the attack, noting that the number of injured patients taken to hospitals had exceeded 80. Pakistan’s Interior Minister, Mohsin Naqvi, condemned the attack and directed authorities to ensure that the wounded receive the best possible medical care. No group has yet claimed responsibility for the explosion. However, suspicion is likely to fall on militant groups such as the Pakistani Taliban or the Islamic State, both of which have previously carried out attacks targeting Shiite worshippers, who form a minority in Pakistan.
