Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor has been released from a police station after being arrested on Thursday morning. He was taken into custody on suspicion of misconduct in public office and later released pending further investigations.

Photographs taken as he left the police station showed him slouching in the back seat of a vehicle, apparently attempting to avoid being photographed by members of the press gathered outside. The arrest forms part of an investigation into his past dealings with convicted child sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. Investigators are examining allegations that he shared sensitive information during his time as the United Kingdom’s trade envoy. Police officers have also carried out searches at properties linked to him, including the Royal Lodge residence.

King Charles III was said to have expressed his deepest concern over the arrest of his brother, while Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor has repeatedly denied any wrongdoing connected to Epstein. Royal biographer Christopher Wilson, speaking to DW, suggested that authorities would not have taken such a step without assembling substantial evidence. He said police and political authorities would only proceed with an arrest if they were confident their case was strong.

Wilson added that the most likely outcome could be Andrew appearing before a criminal court, saying he did not expect the matter to simply disappear. He noted that the situation is unprecedented in modern times, pointing out that no member of the British royal family has been arrested in around 600 years. While dismissing any extreme historical comparisons, Wilson said the former prince nonetheless faces an uncertain and difficult period ahead.
