FG Under Pressure to Pay New NYSC Allowance

The Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA) is speaking out against the Federal Government’s delay in implementing the increased allowance for National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members. The government had announced in September 2024 that it would raise the monthly stipend from ₦33,000 to ₦77,000, but four months later, nothing has changed.

HURIWA is calling the government’s inaction “unjust and deceptive,” and is urging them to follow through on their promise to support the welfare of Nigerian youths. The increased allowance was meant to help alleviate the financial burden faced by NYSC members during their service year, but with inflation on the rise, the delay is only making things harder for them.

It’s worth noting that the government’s decision to increase the allowance was part of its efforts to implement the National Minimum Wage (Amendment) Act 2024. The NYSC Director-General, Brigadier General Y.D. Ahmed, had also advocated for the increase, citing the need to motivate and support corps members during their service year.
