MTN Group and Airtel Africa have signed network-sharing agreements in Uganda and Nigeria to enhance mobile service coverage, improve cost efficiencies, and provide better connectivity, particularly in underserved rural areas. MTN Group President and CEO Ralph Mupita emphasized the rising demand for data services across Africa.

“At MTN, our goal is to deliver digital solutions that drive Africa’s progress. We continue to witness strong structural demand for digital and financial services in our markets. To meet this need, we are investing in coverage and capacity to ensure high-quality connectivity. Network sharing allows us to achieve greater efficiency and better returns,” he said.

Airtel Africa CEO Sunil Taldar highlighted the advantages of shared infrastructure. “While we remain committed to strong competition in brand, service quality, and offerings, network sharing within regulatory limits enables us to build a stronger digital infrastructure. It reduces unnecessary duplication, leading to operational efficiencies that benefit our customers,” Taldar noted.

The agreements include initiatives such as Radio Access Network (RAN) sharing and fibre infrastructure collaborations, aimed at cutting operational costs while ensuring reliable services for more communities.

This collaboration may also accelerate the adoption of advanced technologies, further driving the region’s digital transformation. Following the success of these agreements, MTN Group and Airtel Africa are now exploring similar partnerships in other African countries, including Congo-Brazzaville, Rwanda, and Zambia.
