The Federal Government has announced that the Akanu Ibiam International Airport in Enugu will reopen for flight operations on Monday, April 28, 2025, following its closure for runway repairs seven days earlier. A statement signed by Mrs. Obiageli Orah, Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection at the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), was issued on Saturday.

In 2019, the Federal Government approved N10 billion for the extension and rehabilitation of the airport’s runway. The rehabilitation contract was awarded to PW Construction Company by former Minister Hadi Sirika. Earlier, in 2014, Princess Stella Oduah, a former Aviation Minister, had remodeled the airport, including its runway, using part of a $500 million loan from China. FAAN had announced the airport closure last week after Air Peace suspended operations there. The closure was due to a significant rupture in the asphalt surface at a critical section of the runway, which required emergency repairs.

The rehabilitation work started on April 22 and was completed in time for the airport’s reopening. The statement also noted, “Rehabilitation works on the runway have been finished, and the runway is now cleared for landings and takeoffs by FAAN engineers.” FAAN expressed gratitude to all airport users and stakeholders for their understanding and cooperation, apologizing for the inconvenience caused while emphasizing that the actions were necessary for safety.
