A fire outbreak occurred at Afriland Tower on Broad Street, Lagos Island, on Tuesday, forcing workers to run for safety as smoke engulfed the six-storey building. Videos recorded by eyewitnesses showed some trapped occupants smashing windows for ventilation and escape. While some jumped onto foamy materials placed below, others held on to ledges until ladders were mounted to aid their rescue.

According to the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, the fire started from the inverter room in the basement before spreading smoke to other floors. Fire crews from Ebute Elefun and Sari Iganmu stations responded to the distress call at about 1:38 p.m.

Deputy Controller General of the service, Ogabi Olajide, confirmed that nine victims were rescued. “Five individuals have been successfully resuscitated, while several others escaped unhurt. Efforts are ongoing to revive the remaining four victims,” he said. By late afternoon, the blaze had been contained, though rescue operations and safety checks on the building were still in progress.
