NYSC member killed in Abuja during clash between soldiers and suspected robbers. A serving member of the National Youth Service Corps, identified as Abdulsamad Jamiu, has died after being hit by stray bullets during a confrontation between soldiers and suspected robbers in Abuja. The incident occurred in the early hours of Saturday at Shagari Estate in the Dei-Dei area of the Federal Capital Territory. The Nigerian Army confirmed the development in a statement issued on Sunday.
According to Olawuyi Odunola, troops from the Guards Brigade Quick Response Group were on routine patrol when they received a distress call about a robbery in progress. Upon arriving at the scene, they reportedly came under fire from fleeing suspects, leading to a brief exchange.
During the confrontation, the corps member was caught in the crossfire and sustained fatal injuries despite efforts by the troops to secure the area and protect residents. The Army described the loss as deeply saddening for personnel of the Guards Brigade. Authorities said the situation was initially tense as security operatives worked to repel the attackers and restore calm in the neighbourhood. The Commander of the Guards Brigade has since extended condolences to the victim’s family, the NYSC and others affected by the incident.
The Army also confirmed that an investigation has been launched to establish the full circumstances surrounding the tragedy, with findings to be made public. The remains of the deceased have been taken to Kubwa General Hospital and handed over to the appropriate authorities. Reaffirming its commitment to protecting lives and property, the Guards Brigade stated that operational procedures would be reviewed to strengthen civilian safety, while urging residents to remain calm and cooperate with security agencies.
