Nigeria’s women’s basketball team, D’Tigress, have claimed the 2025 FIBA AfroBasket championship, securing their fifth consecutive title with a 78-64 victory over Mali in the final held on Sunday, August 3, at the Palais des Sports Treichville in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire.

Mali came out strong, ending the first quarter with a 26-20 lead. However, Nigeria quickly took control of the game, dominating the remaining quarters to deliver a decisive win over their West African rivals and clinch a record-extending seventh continental crown.

With this triumph, Nigeria earned automatic qualification for the 2026 FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup in Berlin, Germany. Meanwhile, Mali, South Sudan, and Senegal will move on to the qualification tournaments scheduled for March next year.

Earlier in the day, South Sudan made history by claiming a bronze medal in their tournament debut, edging past eleven-time champions Senegal 66-65 in a dramatic third-place match.

This marks South Sudan’s first-ever medal at the continental level and makes them the first debutant nation to achieve a podium finish at the competition. For Senegal, the loss prolongs their search for another gold, with the defeat representing only the third time they have failed to finish on the podium in the tournament’s 26 editions.
