The Nigerian and Canadian governments have signed a landmark code-sharing agreement to enhance efficiency and connectivity in the aviation sector. Announcing the development on Friday, March 21, Gbenga Saka, Special Adviser on Digital Media to Nigeria’s Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, confirmed the agreement.

Under the new arrangement, airlines from both countries can sell seats on each other’s flights, expanding travel options and strengthening commercial ties. During the signing ceremony, Keyamo emphasized the significance of the agreement, stating, “Today, we take our relationship a step further with this important agreement. While not a full Bilateral Air Service Agreement (BASA), it sets the foundation for codesharing, and we will designate airlines on both sides to implement it.”

He also noted that some airlines had already received approval to operate on the route and encouraged them to leverage the new framework. “With this agreement now in effect, we will engage with local operators on both sides, many of whom have been eager for this opportunity,” Keyamo added.

The Canadian High Commissioner to Nigeria, Pasquale Salvaggio, highlighted the deal’s importance, saying it reflects the growing partnership between both nations. “Code sharing allows an airline to place its designator code on a flight operated by another airline, enabling seamless ticketing and a more convenient travel experience for passengers,” Salvaggio explained.

This agreement follows months of discussions that began in July 2024 on the potential for direct flights and expanded business cooperation in the aviation sector. With the new framework in place, travelers between Nigeria and Canada can expect more flight options, simplified ticketing, and improved connectivity.
